In this 1.5h webinar, Dr. Michael Bender will share insights on how we can avoid and address basic issues that are common in cross-cultural research. For further reading, I recommend van de Vijver and Leung (2021). I will cover fundamentals such as sample selection, choice of a theoretical framework, and test adaptation procedures. Topics that we will cover are:

  • Who to sample? Why samples that are convenient can be a curse and a blessing (study design, sample selection rationale).
  • Dos and Don’ts when translating into a language you are not familiar with (test adaptation).
  • Comparing scores across (cultural) groups – can we compare what we assess, and the scores we get from participants (construct validity, differential item functioning, equivalence)?

The webinar is meant to be interactive, and there will be room for questions. Content is tailored for starting researchers or those that have recently developed an interest in more culturally informed studies and are new to the field.

Delivered by:

Dr. Michael Bender, Tilburg University, email address: m.bender@uvt.nl.

Dr. Bender is regularly delivering methods workshops with Hofstede Insight, has carried out the Cross-cultural Methods summer school of the IACCP in 2021, and is the editor, together with Byron Adams, of the 2021 Cambridge text book on Methods and Methods and Assessment in Culture and Psychology.

Who can participate:

IACCP members of good standing in 2022 are first invited to register on a first-come-first-serve basis, up to a maximum of 15 participants per webinar. On the 10th of April 2022, if there will still be spaces available, registration will open to non-members, on a first-come-first-serve basis if they have a valid justification for not becoming members of IACCP, as assessed by a representative of the IACCP Knowledge Exchange Committee.
