Theories in psychology aim for universality, yet many classic research findings do not replicate when studies are conducted in different nations across the world. This course explores cross-cultural research into a wide range of phenomena and highlights the different approaches to measuring culture. Relevance of cross-cultural material to key areas in psychology, e.g., Emotion, Socialisation and self concept, Perception & memory, Language and thought, Cognitive development, Inter cultural communication, Group Processes, and Cultural reproduction, are discussed. The course is designed to encourage independent and critical thinking about these issues. There is some overlap with anthropology, but different concepts and methodologies are involved.
