As explained by President Marshall Segall
in this issue, circumstances have resulted in a change of venue for the XIVth
International Congress of IACCP. The change from San Jose, California to Bellingham,
Washington is a matter of about 950 miles. To Europeans this would be like going
from Copenhagen to Vienna or from Paris to Rome. However, to residents of the
Great American West, that's not much more than a pleasant Sunday drive! Let
me assure those individuals who may be concerned about distances and travel
connections that it is extremely easy to get into, and out of, Bellingham. Sandwiched
between two quite large international airportsVancouver, British Columbia an
hour to the north and Seattle, Washington not much longer than that to the south
Bellingham is easily and pleasantly accessible.
It's an honor for Western Washington University to host the Silver Jubilee Congress.
Because the Journal of Cross-Cultural Psychology was founded at Western in 1970 and has been an official publication of IACCP since its inaugural meeting in 1972, it is wonderfully appropriate that the 25 th anniversary will be celebrated here. The 11-person Scientific Program Advisory Committee is working hard to put together a memorable program. There will be several special featured events on the program. One will be a Founders' Symposium to honor and recognize several individuals who played significant roles in developing cross-cultural psychology. A series of invited speakers representing major United States ethnic groups will be a significant part of the program. They include James Jones (Black Americans), Bea Medicine (Native Americans), Amado Padilla (Hispanic Americans), and Stanley Sue (Asian Americans). Carol Tavris will also give an invited address. In early July we will be mailing the booklet containing information regarding registration and the submission of manuscripts. Lodging and meals will be at Fairhaven College, a small cluster of buildings on the fringe of Western's main campus. We are working on the price structure to make this IACCP Congress among the least expensive in many years. We are especially concentrating on a differential fee structure so that attendance will be more affordable to individuals from less affluent countries. We hope that all IACCP members and many others will help us put together a solid program spanning the entire topical breadth of Psychology. It is altogether fitting to celebrate this special congress with a diverse and challenging program. There have been several memorable IACCP congresses over the years, and we hope that the Silver Jubilee Congress will be as excellent as it deserves to be. Here is your chance to contribute to a program that will be remembered for years to come and one that will solidify and validate the importance of taking culture into account in virtually all of psychology. In his comments, Marshall Segall told you to start making your plans. I'll add to this by asking you to start packing your bags and to watch our Web site for developments. Complete call for papers and registration information will be viewable on your computer by early June. Keep your arrow pointed at http://www.wwu.edu/~lonner/congress.html |
